| Internet Telephony Explained

Internet Telephony also called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a high quality, low priced alternative to traditional telephony available to all people with a broadband Internet connection (ADSL, Cable, etc.). As your broadband connection allows you to be connected to the Internet 24/7 at a fixed monthly rate, using this same connection for VoIP does not cost you anything extra.
VoIP is using a worldwide accepted communication standard called SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) that negotiates the communication between SIP phone and the other end. A SIP phone can be a
- SoftPhone, running as an application in your PC (requires a microphone and speakers, preferably a headset, connected to your PC (more info),
- Internet phone, just looking like a normal phone, but connected directly to your ADSL, Cable modem (more info),
- ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor), a small box connected between a normal phone, or wireless DECT phone and your ADSL, Cable modem (more info).
So Internet Telephony is possible without switching on your PC using a Internet phone or ATA...
